Kyoto
We finally made it to Kyoto!
And it was amazing!!!
I had heard that it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but I had also heard that it is extremely crowded. Since we visited in an off-season (just before the cherry blossoms emerged) we didn't quite get the full effect of either — the beauty or the crowds.
Still, the city has so many trees of all kinds, ancient shrines and temples, and a love of art and nature woven throughout its streets. Plus it is somehow cleaner and quieter than any of the other cities we've visited in Japan.

There were several craft markets happening last weekend and we enjoyed seeing really unique pieces created with leather, clay, and even old kimono fabric.
It was hard not to buy lots of things, especially when we visited a Woodblock Print Museum and the Kyoto Craft Museum. So much beautiful art everywhere!

Even though the kids were tired when we reached the craft museum, they got really into the hands-on exhibits and then begged to stay longer.

Our last day in town was a little rainy, but we tried to make the best of it. I got up early and ran up to the Kiyomizu-dera temple to see it before the crowds arrived.

After breakfast we walked around the covered markets, where we found lots of treats to eat and some fun things for sale 🐤

We were sad to check out of the hotel…it was the best place we’ve ever stayed (anywhere)! Designed after a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan), the floors are a traditional style tatami mat (bare feet only), there are communal baths (from natural hot springs), and the atmosphere gives total spa vibes (everyone wears nemaki /Japanese pajamas around the grounds). We really embraced the relaxing atmosphere and spent A LOT of time just hanging around the hotel in our Japanese pjs. It was totally worth the $180/night we paid, which included nearly 24/7 access to the baths (each with different minerals and temperatures), massage chairs, and free bowls of “snack” ramen available from 9-11 every night.
We also opted for the breakfast add-on one day (which wasn't cheap), but included a huge array of savory Japanese soups, fishes, and pickled things, as well as some “western-style” options.
The kids asked if we could live here!

We will definitely be back! There is so much more to see in Kyoto (and we already know of a great place to stay)…

Charlie has a nightlight like the ones in your video. They are so cute! I love the craft museum--looks like a great visit.
