Note: This is a guest post from my friend Mary. I couldn’t possibly try all of the flavors of chips that Japan has to offer, so I sent a box off to the biggest chip aficionado I know… here is her report:
I have to admit, I was skeptical about all of these crazy Japanese potato chip flavors. I mean, “Savory Soy Sauce and Mayonnaise,” “Salted Cod Roe,” “Cabbage Taro?” Katelyn sent me 14 chips to review and I didn’t think I would like any of them, but as it turns out I liked the majority of them! Luckily Katelyn included translations and color coded the chips according to savory, spicy, and sweet. Since I have an aversion to spicy foods I enlisted my husband to try those. And my kids were only brave enough to try a couple of the chips, so most of these reviews are based on my preferences. I would consider myself a chip lover—I have chips with lunch almost every day—and therefore I was happy to help the Fossons out with this very important research.

Ironically, one of my favorites was “Savory Soy Sauce and Mayonnaise.” Who would have thought? And my other favorites were “Plain Corn,” “Caramel Corn and Roasted Peanuts” (although there were hardly any peanuts), “A Little Dark Luxury Chocolate,” and “Soy Sauce Onigiri.” All of my favorites I would buy if given the chance. My least favorites, on the other hand, you couldn’t pay me to eat. Those included “Pizza Potato” (which even my husband didn’t like and he would eat pizza every day if he could), “Refreshing Plum,” and “Raw Soy Sauce,” which tasted like a soy sauce dunked mini tortilla and had zero crunch to it. No thank you!
Some other surprisingly tasty flavors were “Umami Consumme,” “Addictive BBQ,” and “Cabbage Taro.” For the full rating of all 14 bags see my rating chart below. Thank you Fossons for this fun research assignment and a little taste of Japan!
